another常用在单数形式的可数名词前。也可以用作是代名词，后不接名词。修饰不可数的复数名词时，通常用more。CouldIhaveanotherpieceofbread?CouldIhaveanother(one)?Wouldyoulikesomemoremeat.

another等于是an加other，因此不能说theanotherdesk，thatanotherdesk等，里面的another都该改作other；

another指“另外的任何一个”，加上原本的那个，心里应至少有三个，才有任何一个的可能，因此不适用于只有两个时，如不能说Ihavetwobrothers,oneistwenty,andanotherisfifteen，应用theother代替；

相似短语的不同意思：anotherandbetterpen指“另外好些的一枝笔”，anotherbetterpen指“另外一枝好些的笔”，（已提过的一枝或多枝好些的笔以外的一枝）another,betterpen同anotherandbetterpen同义，逗号相当于and；

another后可接数字和复数形式的名词，如anotherfivehours；

oneanother和eachother均指“相互，彼此”。Thefiveboyshelponeanother/eachother.这五个男孩互相帮助彼此。

oneanother不能作主语。不能说Weknowwhatoneanotherwants,能说Weknoweachwhattheotherwants或Eachofusknowswhattheotherwantsc。若有三或三个以上的人，应说Weknow

eachwhattheotherswant或Eachofusknowswhattheotherswant；

oneanother不可以与everyone同用，都表达了“互相，每个”的意思，如不能说Everyoneofthemlookedatoneanotherandsmiled，应把everyone替换成All；

当other用在名词前时，不可用复数形式others。不用在名词前，单用时，可用复数形式。通常情况下，others只用来指代前面已经提过的名词，不过有一个例外是，人们习惯用(the)others指(the)otherpeople。Wherearetheotherphotos?Haveyougotanyothers?

another用作形容词的基本意思是“(又)另一个的”,主要指同类中又多一(个)的或与前述不同的另一个的,在句中只用作定语。another后常接单数可数名词,但当复数名词前有基数词或few时,也可用another修饰。

another这个形容词是由an和other两词合缀而成,因此它不能加冠词或其他限定性的形容词。
