强调句型的基本结构是“It is / was +被强调部分+ that / who+ 句子其余部分”。其中，被强调的可以是主语、宾语、状语等，如果被强调的是人用that或who，其余情况用that。如：

It was my secretary that sent the bill to Mr Harding yesterday. 是我的秘书昨天把账单送给哈丁先生的。(强调主语my secretary)

It was his best suit that John wore to the dance last night. 约翰昨晚是穿着他最好的一套衣服去参加舞会的。(强调宾语his best suit)

It was last night(that)John wore his best suit to the dance. 约翰是昨晚穿着他最好的衣服去参加舞会的。(强调状语last night)

It was to the dance that John wore his best suit last night. 约翰昨晚穿着他最好的衣服是去参加舞会的。(强调状语to the dance)

It is from advertising that a newspaper earns a lot of its profits. 报纸获利最多的部分在于广告收入。(强调状语from advertising)

二、强调句的一般疑问句形式

强调句型的一般疑问句形式为“Is / Was+ it + 被强调的部分+ that / who / whom+句子其余部分?”。如：

Is it Tommy who answered the telephone? 是汤米接的电话吗?

Was it in 2003 that SARS broke out? 是2003年SARS突发的吗?

三、强调句型的特殊疑问句形式

强调句型的特殊疑问句形式“特殊疑问词+is / was + that / who / whom +句子其余部分?”如：

What was it that he wanted? 他要的是什么?

Who was it that broke the window? 谁把窗子打破了?

Why is it that you object to the idea? 你为什么反对这个想法?

四、not…until…的强调句形式

当被强调的是not…until句型中的until引导的时间状语时，要将not放在until的前面。如：

It was not until I saw Mary that I felt happy. 直到见到玛丽我才高兴起来。

It was not until I met you that I knew real happiness. 直到我遇到你以后，我才真正体会到幸福。

五、强调动词的方法

使用强调句型进行强调时，原则上不能对动词进行强调，遇此情况可考虑使用what…do…这一结构。如：

She writes science tiction. 她写科幻小说。

→What she does is (to) write science fiction. 她所做的就是写科幻小说。

六、强调全句的方法

若要强调一个句子，可以考虑使用what和动词happen的强调结构。试比较：

The car broke down. 汽车坏了。

→What happened was (that) the car broke down. 发生的事就是汽车坏了。
