firm 主要用作形容词，意为“牢固的”“稳固的”、 “坚定的”等。如：

Prices are still firm. 物价仍然稳定。

I have a firm belief in his honesty. 我坚信他的诚实。

You should be firm with them. 你应该要严格要求他们。

The leg of this chair is firmer than the leg of that one. 这把椅子的腿比那把的结实。

You must hang the picture on a firm nail or it will fall. 你得把画挂在牢固的钉子上，否则它会掉下来的。

She kept a firm hold of her son’s hand as they crossed the road. 横过马路时，她紧紧地牵着她儿子的手。

注意：firm 有时也用作副词，但其用法十分有限，通常只能与 stand, hold, stay 等少数动词连用。如：

He stood firm against such threat. 他面对这样的威胁立场坚定。

但是，也有人认为这样用的 firm 仍为形容词，其前的 stand, hold, stay 等为连系动词。

If we stand firm, I firmly believe we shall succeed. 只要我们立场坚定，我坚信我们会成功的。

尽管firmly作为程度副词用法比较广泛，但仍有些动词习惯上不能用它来修饰，如英语可说I firmly believe(我坚信)，但习惯上不能说I firmly think。

3. 比较

hold firmly 通常用于本义，指“紧紧握住”；而 hold firm 则通常用于引申义，指坚持原则、理想、信仰等。但 stand firm 可用于本义和引申义。
